Railfans flocked to the Western Maryland where four units were still working out their final years on the railroad. The only Alco cab units on the roster, the WM ordered four FA-2s in 1941 because EMD models weren't readily available. By the late 1960s, the four found themselves operating mostly out of Hagerstown, Maryland on freights as well as helper service on Williamson Hill. Only one received the \"Circus\" paint scheme before they were leased to the Reading and then sold in 1972. Their story didn't end there - all four became power cars on the Long Island where railfans would again celebrate the \"last of the FA's\" decades later. We pay tribute to the Wild Mary in its final and most colorful years in this new set which includes a pair of powered FA-2s, 60' Boxcar, 50' TOFC flatcar with trailer, 100-ton hopper and Northeast style caboose. On paper at least, the locomotives could put 89% of their loaded weight to\u003cbr\u003euse and pull a train 5 miles long. They were so powerful that you couldn’t put enough\u003cbr\u003eweight behind them to truly test it without breaking couplers and by some accounts\u003cbr\u003eremain the most powerful locomotives ever built.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe first Triplex entered service in 1914 as number 2603 and named after a prominent and recently\u003cbr\u003eretired engineer on the Erie, Matt H. Shay. The locomotive was as much of a marketing statement for the\u003cbr\u003eErie as it was motive power. The locomotive performed well enough that two more were delivered in 1916\u003cbr\u003ewith only a few minor modifications from the original. The three were assigned as helper engines on the\u003cbr\u003eSusquehanna Division - best known as the line over Starrucca Viaduct.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Triplex was a compound Mallet, with high pressure steam going to the center pair of pistons\u003cbr\u003efirst. And although there were elements in the design to compensate for variable traction under the tender\u003cbr\u003eas fuel was consumed, as it ran light wheel slipping could be an issue. The locomotives stayed in service until\u003cbr\u003eas late as 1933.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOnly the Virginian made another attempt at a Triplex with a single locomotive. It was rebuilt as a\u003cbr\u003esmaller 2-8-8-2 soon after, however. While not a major success, they were certainly not a failure as far as experimental steam designs are concerned. More accurately, they were truly too big for their time. It would\u003cbr\u003ehave been interesting to see the concept revisited a few decades later when technology had improved\u003cbr\u003eand train weights increased, but alas it never came to be.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eTo bring this locomotive back to the O Scale market as anything less than a VISION LINE model\u003cbr\u003ewould be a crime! In 1935, the railroad began operating dedicated daily weekday trains. Boxcars were initially painted black with orange borders, making them easy to distinguish from the general service pool. A winged SP herald emblem was used to advertise the service and an artist mock up was made on the builder's photo for car 9127, but it was never applied in real life. The more familiar Overnight arrow emblem began appearing in 1946. Trailer on flatcar service was added to the train consist in 1953 and the trains remained popular, running between 25 and 50 cars on average and continued well into the diesel era. In the spirit of this great service and marketing, Lionel is taking the Overnight to the next level! It's 1953 and the Southern Pacific is competing hard with the highways for the business - so what if the train got another lift? This complete set includes an AC-9 trimmed out to match it's consist. Freight cars include four Overnight boxcars including the proposed wing scheme on 9127 and an additional outside braced boxcar along with two Postwar style cars including one with FreightSounds. The program started with trailer service, so it only makes sense to include a special piggyback flatcar in this train. Inspired by the boxcar program, both the flat and trailers feature a special Overnight black and orange paint scheme. And a train this special deserves a matching caboose. This set includes another black beauty, complete with full VISION features. You could expand the consist with additional boxcars available separately.
