In 1937, seeing that new diesels were putting the fireman's role in jeopardy, the railroad unions negotiated the \"90,000 Pound Rule\" with the railroads - specifying that any engine with a weight on drivers of 90,000 pounds or more would require a two-man crew. General Electric's 44-tonner, introduced in 1940, skirted the 90,000 pound rule and was thus the largest locomotive that could legally be operated by one person on a common carrier railroad.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut while the 44-tonner put the fireman out of work, it made the engineer's life easier than it had been on the 0-4-0 or 0-6-0 steamer it replaced. The greenhouse-like cab in the center of the engine offered 360-degree visibility, a decided advantage in the chaos of the switch yards, industrial areas and railroad backshops where the 44-tonners usually labored. In the event of a collision, the engineer had the protection of a hood at each end of his locomotive, unlike an end-cab switcher.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnder each of those hoods throbbed a dependable 180-hp Caterpillar V-8 diesel - so dependable that many of these engines are still hauling freight or tourists today, more than seven decades after they were built. Predicting modern diesels, where the lone engineer shares his cab with a train crew that no longer has a caboose, the 44-tonner's cab also sported a second seat for a brakeman or conductor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnlike most of its competitors in the small engine business, who saw their main clients as industrial plants and short lines, General Electric pursued sales with Class 1 railroads. At least 26 of them rostered 44-tonners, with the Pennsy having the largest fleet at 45 engines. The 44-tonner was also beloved by industrial roads and short lines, where it often served as mainline power on lines with prosaic names like Arcade \u0026amp; Attica or Dansville \u0026amp; Mount Morris. The engine was also popular with the U.S. military for use domestically and abroad. By the time the last of the 44-tonners was outshopped in 1956, about 386 engines were working in locales as diverse as Cuba, India and Saudi Arabia.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile our Premier model is not the first O scale 44-tonner, we believe it is the best. While most of Baldwin's diesels were ultimately disappointments to its customers, the engines' unique looks won the hearts of American railfans and modelers. Nothing else on rails looked like the baby-faced 24-wheeled Centipedes or the Raymond Loewy-styled Sharknoses. The distinctive VO-1000, perhaps the most muscular looking of all first-generation diesel switchers, was Baldwin's most successful product. The U.S. military and over 30 class one railroads bought 548 copies of the 1000 hp. engine between 1939 and 1946.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll Baldwin diesels were powered by variations of the same De La Vergne diesel motor. Acquired by Baldwin in 1931, the De La Vergne Engine Company had started life in 1880 making mechanical refrigeration machines for breweries. Its power plant for Baldwin's locomotives was unique among diesels of its time. In order to make the fuel burn slower and give their 4-cycle engine a longer power stroke, De La Vergne's designers used massive cylinders more than a foot in diameter and added a separate combustion chamber above each cylinder. To allow the fuel more time to burn, they ran the engine at a maximum speed of 625 rpm - just over half the speed of most competitive diesels. In the October 1936 issue of Baldwin Locomotives Magazine, the company claimed that \"slow combustion gives low fuel consumption, absence of smoke, quick pick-up, and smooth idling.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUltimately the massive De La Vergne motor proved to be both a blessing and a curse. Teamed up with equally heavy-duty traction motors supplied by Westinghouse, Baldwin's prime mover found its niche in low-speed lugging assignments, which it handled relatively well. But those were just the types of assignments in which crews tended to abuse equipment and push an engine to its limits. As a result, Baldwin engines eventually developed a reputation for high maintenance costs. The VO-1000 switcher, with its normally aspirated 8-cylinder engine, was actually one of Baldwin's most dependable locomotives, and many served for decades. The turbocharged models that succeeded the VO-1000, however, were plagued with problems that included excessive piston wear. The modern cylindrical covered hopper was pioneered by American Car and Foundry in 1961. Up to that time, the typical covered hopper was basically a coal hopper with a roof. Like most freight cars, covered hoppers had a center sill that ran down the middle, and unloading doors were placed on either side of the sill. Some of the load would invariably cake on the center sill, and cars would have to be vibrated to loosen the product and fully empty the car.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eACF’s innovation was the Center Flow design. The frame members were moved to the outside of the car, the hopper body was made cylindrical, and the unloading doors were moved to the center line of the car, at the bottom of the cylinder. The result was a car that unloaded more completely with less work and had a larger load capacity as well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur model is based on the Government of Canada hoppers constructed in Canada by several car builders in the late 1970s an d early 1980s and still in service today. A government Web site explains the story behind the cars: “There are approximately 12,100 railway hopper cars in the Government of Canada fleet, which form the core of rolling stock used by the Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway to move western grain. These cars are provided at no cost to the railways for the transportation of grain from the Prairies to the ports of Vancouver and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, and Churchill, Manitoba, for export, or to Thunder Bay and Armstrong, Ontario, for domestic or export purposes. The railways have day-to-day control of the cars and allocate them to grain shippers on a commercial basis.
