By the time the MP15 debuted in 1974, the multipurpose road switcher, descended from the Alco RS-series and the EMD GP7, had become the universal locomotive. The cab unit was already a dinosaur and the single-purpose yard engine was rapidly headed for extinction. To create a more versatile switcher, EMD gave the MP15 a longer frame than its predecessor, the SW1500, in order to fit it with the same Blomberg trucks as a road engine. Those better-riding trucks, along with more weight, a larger fuel capacity, and bigger sandboxes, made the MP15 suitable for road duty as well as switching, and allowed EMD to sell more than 500 units before the last MP15 was delivered in 1987.

The MP15 came in two flavors, traditional and modern. The MP15DC used traditional electrical gear and shared the front-mounted radiator and air intakes that had characterized all previous EMD end-cab switchers. It was basically a beefed-up SW1500. The MP15AC, however, incorporated EMD's Dash 2 technology, with solid-state transistors and circuit boards replacing the wiring, switches, and relays found in earlier diesels. Its cooling system was borrowed from the "Tunnel Motors" EMD had created for the Southern Pacific.

The front of the hood was plain, like the rear of a Tunnel Motor, and the radiator air intakes were moved to the sides of the hood, low and at the front of the engine. Not surprisingly, the Southern Pacific was the first customer to order an MP15AC. Because the Dash 2 technology was relatively new and some railroads found it unnecessarily expensive for a lowly switcher, EMD continued to make both the DC and AC versions of the MP15 for most of its production run, and sales for the two models were about equal.

M.T.H. returns our full-scale version of the last and largest of the end-cab switchers to the RailKing Scale line for 2017. Our model replicates the more-traditional MP15DC with its front-mounted radiator and air intakes. Like its prototype, this RailKing Scale engine is equally at home doing slow-speed yard duty or hauling commuters or freight along your main line.

Announced Date:

December 2023

Released Date:

Est. 4th Quarter 2024

Individually Boxed:

N/A

Road Name: Morristown & Erie

Road Number: Magnolia

Product Line: Premier

Scale: O Scale

System: 3-Rail

Features:

Intricately Detailed, Durable ABS Bodies

Stamped Metal Floors

Detailed Car Undercarriage

Colorful, Attractive Paint Schemes

Metal Wheels and Axles

Die-Cast 4-Wheel Trucks

Fast-Angle Wheel Sets

Needle-Point Axles

(2) Operating Die-Cast Metal Couplers

O Scale Kadee-Compatible Coupler Mounting Pads

Constant Voltage Overhead LED Interior Lighting

End-of-Car Diaphragms

Separate Metal Handrails

Detailed Car Interiors

Sliding Baggage Car Doors

Detailed Brake Wheel

1:48 Scale Proportions

Unit Measures: 19” x 2 7/16” x 3 1/2”

Operates On O-42 Curves

Overview:

The lightweight, streamlined passenger car was a product of the Great Depression. While the heavyweight steel cars built in the teens and 1920s were dependable and often luxurious, their dark colors and solid, battleship-like exteriors did little to lift the spirits at a time when the entire nation needed a pick-me-up. As noted railroad historian John H. White, Jr. put it in The American Railroad Passenger Car, “Some hope during these gloomy years was offered by a new design concept called streamlining. It presented a sleek, modern image of speed and innovation. What had been an obscure technical term in aerodynamics was made into a household word through an astute publicity campaign mounted by several railroad traffic departments. It succeeded in creating a general interest in railroading practically unknown since the opening of the first transcontinental line… According to Railway Age, ‘For the first time in many years, the words ‘sold out’ re-entered the ticket clerk’s vocabulary.’”

But as White notes, the real change in passenger car construction was in weight, not the streamlined appearance that was largely for show: “Weight, not air friction, was the chief obstacle to economic operation.” Unlike the heavyweights, the lightweight cars that debuted in the mid1930s featured sides and roofs that contributed to their structural strength, eliminating the need for the heavyweights’ massive underframes. Trucks went from six wheels to four, non-revenue space was decreased by using a vestibule on only one end of the car, and lighter, stronger, more rust resistant steel alloys came into widespread use. A typical new lightweight could be 15-20 tons lighter than the heavyweight car it replaced.

The majority of lightweights were 80’–85’ long, which scales out to about 21” in O gauge. Many O gauge modelers, however, find cars of this length impractical, as they require large curves and create long trains that can overwhelm a typical-sized layout. For those reasons, our Premier lightweights are about 70 scale feet in length — reproducing the look and feel of prototype streamliners in a model that will round O-42 curves with ease and look at home on most scale-detailed O gauge layouts.

Announced Date:

October 2024

Released Date:

Est. 3rd Qtr. 2025

Individually Boxed:

2 units/case

Road Name: Morristown & Erie

Road Number: 18

Product Line: Master

Scale: O Scale

Catalog: Atlas O Premier Fall 2024 Catalog

2 & 3-Rail DCS Features:

• Proto-Sound 3.0 With the Digital Command System Featuring Freight Yard Proto-Effects

• Locomotive Speed Control In Scale MPH Increments

• 1:48 Scale dimensions

• A multitude of separately applied details such as door handles, windshield wipers, brake chain, m.u. hoses, etc.

• All metal handrails, grab irons and stanchions

• Accurate painting and lettering

• Directional LED lighting

• Ditch lights (paint scheme dependent)

• Detailed die-cast AAR type B trucks

• Operating Smoke Unit in DCS units

• Dual flywheel-equipped motors

• 2-Rail locos have fixed pilots and scale couplers

• Minimum diameter curve: O-36 (3-Rail)

• Minimum radius curve: 36” (2-Rail)

• Length: Approx. 14.5”

The ALCO C424 model was one of the first “Century-series” locomotives to be produced. The S-4, like the earlier S-2, was a 1000-horsepower switcher. Nearly 800 units were built for North American (Alco) and Canadian (by Alco’s Canadian subsidiary Montreal Locomotive Works) railroads between 1947 and 1956. The primary spotting difference between the S-2 and the S-4 can be noted in the trucks. The S-2 has Blunt trucks, while the S-4 has AAR-style trucks. The versatility of the S-2s and S-4’s was evidenced by their service in mainline railroads, shortlines, and industrial switching operations. The S-4, along with the S-2, became one of ALCO’s most successful diesel switchers, helping railroads transition from steam to diesel. Its rugged design and turbocharged engine made it a favorite for heavy switching duties. Canadian railroads were significant buyers, thanks to MLW production. Many units remained in service for decades, and several are preserved or still operating on short lines and tourist railroads today.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1011/0560/files/h10005017_64706682-efc0-49a0-8118-2d3ee50a8f3f.jpg?v=1772387541
aho-10005032
Atlas HO 10005032 - Master - Gold - S-4 Diesel Locomotive "Morristown & Erie" #14

Road Name: Morristown & Erie

Road Number: 14

Product Line: Master - Gold

Scale: HO Scale

Catalog: Atlas Winter 2025 Catalog

Features:

• 5-pole skewed armature motor for reliable operation
• Dual-flywheels for maximum performance at all speeds
• Exceptional painting and printing
• Sturdy die-cast mainframe and gear cases
• Metal couplers
• Gold models are equipped with ESU LokSound

ESU Loksound Functionality Features:
• ESU LokSound decoder, supporting all DCC programming modes.
• Flexible mapping of function keys F0 to F31.
• Follows all NMRA DCC standards and recommended practices.
• Over 20 sound effects are available, including engine start-up and shutdown, prime mover sounds through all eight notches,
bell, air horn, air compressor, and more

Overview:

Alco introduced the S-4 locomotive in 1950.
