Santa Fe
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (reporting mark ATSF), often referred to as the Santa Fe or AT&SF, was one of the larger railroads in the United States. The railroad was chartered in February, 1859 to serve the cities of Atchison and Topeka, Kansas, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The railroad reached the Kansas–Colorado border in 1873 and Pueblo, Colorado in 1876. To create a demand for its services, the railroad set-up real estate offices and sold farmland from the land grants that it was awarded by Congress.

Despite being chartered to serve the city, the railroad chose to bypass Santa Fe, due to the engineering challenges of the mountainous terrain. Eventually a branch line from Lamy, New Mexico brought the Santa Fe railroad to its namesake city.

The Santa Fe was a pioneer in intermodal freight transport; at one time or another it operated an airline, the short-lived Santa Fe Skyway, and a tugboat fleet. Its bus line extended passenger transportation to areas not accessible by rail, and ferryboats on the San Francisco Bay allowed travelers to complete their westward journeys to the Pacific Ocean. The AT&SF was the subject of a popular song, Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer's "On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe", written for the film The Harvey Girls (1946).

The railroad officially ceased operations on December 31, 1996, when it merged with the Burlington Northern Railroad to form the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway.

Announced Date:

Jan 2021

Released Date:

Aug 2022

Individually Boxed:

Yes

Rail Line: Santa Fe

Gauge: O Gauge

Scale Type: Traditional

Power: Electric

Engine Type: Diesel

Min Curve: O31

Dimensions: 52 1/2"

Most Recent Catalog: 2018 C1 Big Book

Features:

SET INCLUDES:

Santa Fe FT diesel locomotive

Two coach cars

Observation car

Eight curved O36 FasTrack® track sections, one 10" straight FasTrack®

Plug-Expand-Play power lock-on section, one FasTrack® terminal section, and two 10" straight

Wallpack power supply

LionChief® remote

LOCOMOTIVE FEATURES:

Electric locomotive controlled by LionChief® remote or Bluetooth LionChief® app

On/Off switch for sound

RailSounds RC™ sound system with diesel revving and background sounds, horn, bell, and user-activated announcements

Operating directional headlight

Two powerful maintenance-free motor

Operating couplers

Illuminated cab interior

PASSENGER CAR FEATURES:

Die-cast metal trucks and operating couplers

Illuminated and detail interior

Flexible diaphragms between cars

Opening doors

LIONCHIEF™ REMOTE FEATURES:

Forward and reverse speed control knob

Three buttons for whistle sound, bell, and special passenger announcements

Requires three AAA alkaline batteries (not included)

Overview:

One of the most beautiful trains to grace the railway is back in our Ready-to-Run line-up and better than ever, the Santa Fe Super Chief! stride forward with the introduction of the turbocharged SD24. In turbocharged engines, exhaust gases are used to power a turbine that increases cylinder air pressure, thus effectively increasing horsepower. In fact, the 16-cylinder model 567 diesel that produced 1800 horsepower in the normally aspirated SD18 locomotive was upgraded to 2400 horsepower in the turbocharged SD24.

Turbocharged engines also run better at varying altitudes, making them ideal for railroads that travel through changing terrain. Look on the left side of the SD24's hood for the semicircular bulge that marks the location of the turbine.

The SD24s were close relatives of the popular GP-series engines. The primary difference was that SD-series (for "Special Duty") locomotives were lengthened to make room for three-axle, three-motor trucks. For a GP and an SD engine of the same horsepower, the extra wheels on an SD locomotive gave it more tractive effort at low speeds and less engine weight on each axle. For this reason, the SD24 and others in the SD series were ideally suited for secondary lines with lighter rail.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1011/0560/files/IMG_3113_4941d02d-4068-49b0-a51d-f867adbd90b1.jpg?v=1683772879
ao-3003052
Atlas O 3003052 - Premier - 75' Depressed Center Flat Car "Santa Fe" w/ Load

Announced Date:

Oct 2022

Released Date:

Feb 2024

Individually Boxed:

No - 2 to a case

Road Name: Santa Fe

Road Number: 90002, 90015

Product Line: Premier

Scale: O Scale

System: 3-Rail

Features:

Detailed, Durable ABS Body

Metal Wheels and Axles

Die-Cast 4-Wheel Trucks

Colorful, Attractive Paint Schemes

Operating Die-Cast Metal Couplers

Needle-Point Axles

Realistic Transformer Load

1:48 Scale Dimensions

Unit Measures: 19 1/2” x 2 1/2” x 4 7/8”

Operates On O-54 Curves (3-Rail)

Overview:

Heavy duty flat cars are designed for transporting heavy and/or oversize loads such as machinery, construction equipment, and many other items that require capacities beyond a standard flat car. Especially during peak harvest seasons, the 2900s were often chosen for the many produce extras which steamed east from California daily. A 2900-led train of yellow reefers is nearly as iconic to the Santa Fe as red/silver F units on the streamlined Chief. This set captures the best of the Santa Fe with a LEGACY 2900 class Northern, three "map" reefers including one with full VISION features and an interactive "Crew Sounds" caboose to add to the action. The 2913 has power to spare so you can easily expand your train with additional reefers and general freight cars available separately.

Announced Date:

Jan 2023

Released Date:

Nov 2023

Individually Boxed:

Yes

Rail Line: Santa Fe

Gauge: O Gauge

Power: Electric

Engine Type: Diesel

Min Curve: O31

Dimensions: Length: 52 1/2"

Most Recent Catalog: 2023 Big Book

Features:

SET INCLUDES:

Santa Fe FT diesel locomotive

Two coach cars

Observation car

Eight pieces of O36 curved FasTrack®

Two FasTrack® 10" straight track sections

One LionChief® FasTrack® Terminal section

One Plug-Expand-Play® Power Lock-on section

Wall-pack power supply

LionChief® remote

LOCOMOTIVE FEATURES:

Electric locomotive controlled by included LionChief® remote, LionChief® Universal Remote (sold separately) or Bluetooth™ LionChief® app

Lionel Voice Control (LVC) - run your locomotive by speaking commands into your phone via LionChief® App

Voice Streaming & While the heavyweight steel cars built in the teens and 1920s were dependable and often luxurious, their dark colors and solid, battleship-like exteriors did little to lift the spirits at a time when the entire nation needed a pick-me-up. As noted railroad historian John H. White, Jr. put it in The American Railroad Passenger Car, “Some hope during these gloomy years was offered by a new design concept called streamlining. It presented a sleek, modern image of speed and innovation. What had been an obscure technical term in aerodynamics was made into a household word through an astute publicity campaign mounted by several
railroad traffic departments. It succeeded in creating a general interest in railroading practically unknown since the opening of the first transcontinental line… According to Railway Age, ‘For the first time in many years, the words ‘sold out’ re-entered the ticket clerk’s vocabulary.’”

But as White notes, the real change in passenger car construction was in weight, not the streamlined appearance that was largely for show: “Weight, not air friction, was the chief obstacle to economic operation.” Unlike the heavyweights, the lightweight cars that debuted in the mid-1930s featured sides and roofs that contributed to their structural strength, eliminating the need for the heavyweights’ massive underframes. Trucks went from six wheels to four, non-revenue space was decreased by using a vestibule on only one end of the car, and lighter, stronger, more rust resistant steel alloys came into widespread use. A typical new lightweight could be 15-20 tons lighter than the heavyweight car it replaced.

As with the diesel revolution that was simultaneously taking place, one of the key players in the changeover to lightweights was not an established industry name, but an upstart new player from the automotive industry: the Budd Company of Philadelphia, a supplier of auto body stampings. In 1928, Edward G. Budd had heard about stainless steel, a lightweight, rustproof metal introduced in 1912 by Krupp of Germany. Budd was the first to grasp the potential of stainless beyond cutlery and novelty items. The key problem was the inability of stainless steel to be fabricated with normal welding techniques. As noted railroad historian John H. White, Jr. put it in The American Railroad Passenger Car, “Some hope during these gloomy years was offered by a new design concept called streamlining.

Budd’s chief engineer, Colonel Earl J.W. Ragsdale, spent five years developing the key process needed to make stainless into a viable structural material: the patented Shotweld electric welding process.

Beginning with the Burlington’s Pioneer Zephyr of 1934, gleaming Budd-built trains, constructed almost entirely of stainless, helped define the look of the streamlined era to the American public — even on railroads like the Pennsylvania and Norfolk and Western that painted over the stainless with company colors. While other car builders such as Pullman countered with stainless-sheathed steel cars like the Southern Pacific’s Daylights, they were forced to use rivets rather than welding for construction. In later years, the result was that Budd cars lasted almost indefinitely, while the stainless-sheathed imitators were plagued with out-of-sight rusting under the sheathing.

The majority of lightweights were 80’–85’ long, which scales out to about 21” in O gauge. Many O gauge modelers, however, find cars of this length impractical, as they require large curves and create long trains that can overwhelm a typical-sized layout. For those reasons, our Premier lightweights are about 70 scale feet in length — reproducing the look and feel of prototype streamliners in a model that will round O-42 curves with ease and look at home on most scale-detailed O gauge layouts.

No other manufacturer matches the quality and value found inside an M.T.H. Premier Line passenger car. Using an intricately detailed, yet durable ABS body atop smooth rolling die-cast metal trucks results in a lightweight car that won't bog down a locomotive struggling to pull heavy aluminum passenger cars. This run focuses on the SD45R group in the post-1992 paint scheme, with detail variations on each of the three road numbers to accurately reflect the diversity of the fleet.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1011/0560/files/IMG_9188_8ccb6495-1755-41b1-8d18-15558c805e7f.jpg?v=1735246478

Product #: TCP-11010

Type: Solvent-Based Paint

Size: 1 Ounce Bottle

Set Contains:

TCP-019 - Brown

TCP-020 - Blue

TCP-021 - Yellow

TCP-022 - Red

TCP-251 - Freight Car - Brown, 1945 to Current

TCP-333 - Tarpan Gray

1:48 scale

Made of die-cast metal and plastic

Painted in Santa Fe Red, Silver and Yellow

Pad-printed logos

Free-wheeling action

Round out your Santa Fe collection with this 1:48 scale Box Truck. For a brief period in the 1800s, Long Island farmers could ship their loaded wagons to market on a local railroad. The modern use of railroads to ship loaded trailers began on the Chicago Great Western Railroad (the “Corn Belt Route”) in 1935 and became widespread in the 1950s under the leadership of a former GM executive named Eugene Ryan and early supporters that included the Pennsy, New Haven, Chicago & Eastern Illinois, Burlington, and Southern Pacific railroads.

Originally a large number of trailers were railroad-owned, and loading and unloading was done “circus-style” by driving the trailers onto a string of flatcars from one end. A major advance came in the 1960s with the advent of the first side-lift cranes, dramatically speeding up loading and unloading. Today the combination of trailer and container shipments, known collectively as intermodal, constitutes the largest class of freight on American railroads.

MTH Premier O Scale freight cars are the perfect complement to any manufacturer's scale proportioned O Gauge locomotives.
