Railfans flocked to the Western Maryland where four units were still working out their final years on the railroad. The only Alco cab units on the roster, the WM ordered four FA-2s in 1941 because EMD models weren't readily available. By the late 1960s, the four found themselves operating mostly out of Hagerstown, Maryland on freights as well as helper service on Williamson Hill. Only one received the \"Circus\" paint scheme before they were leased to the Reading and then sold in 1972. Their story didn't end there - all four became power cars on the Long Island where railfans would again celebrate the \"last of the FA's\" decades later. We pay tribute to the Wild Mary in its final and most colorful years in this new set which includes a pair of powered FA-2s, 60' Boxcar, 50' TOFC flatcar with trailer, 100-ton hopper and Northeast style caboose. The earliest railroad plows were likely derived from agricultural plows, and were the first instance of a plow being pushed from behind rather than pulled by horses or oxen. In 1840, little more than a decade after the first steam engine plied American rails, Charles Lowbaert was granted a patent for a wedge, or “bucker,” railroad plow. Like our model, that pioneering snowplow featured an inclined plane to bring the snow up off the rails and a pointed, triangular wedge to throw it to both sides of the track. Over time, railroad plows evolved into an arsenal of equipment ranging from engine-mounted blades to the ultimate snow-fighting weapon, the rotary snow plow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur model represents a wedge plow that was likely cobbled together by a railroad’s shop crew. And in one sense, Dilworth's project was a failure. Railroads bought Geeps for mainline service and relegated older power to secondary lines as they had always done. But his brainchild became the runaway best-seller among first-generation diesel power. U.S. and Canadian railroads bought nearly 7,000 copies of the 1500 horsepower GP7, introduced in 1949, and the 1750 horsepower GP9, produced from 1954 through 1963.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn those early days of diesel power, experienced engineers loved the Geep cab because, unlike the new streamliners, it felt like home to them. An engineer in a Geep running long hood forward sat near the back of the engine, looking out over the power plant - just as he had in a steam engine.
