Overview:
EMD first introduced the SD70M in 1992. The new model featured a new radial truck design and produced 4,000 horsepower from a 16-cylinder model 710 diesel engine delivered to six DC traction motors. By the end of production in 2004, EMD built 1,609 SD70Ms-1,500 of which were delivered to the Union Pacific! UP's first order for 1,000 of the model in 2000 was record setting and it was to become the backbone of their roster for the next decade. Over the twelve years of production, there have been many changes in the locomotives' design. The most notable were the short hood and radiator sections which evolved to set the scene for the SD70M-2s to follow. Although early production units were similar to the SD60M and SD70MAC, the three models differed in dimensions and many details.
Reflecting those differences, Lionel's new LEGACY SD70M features a completely new design and tooling. This first release captures the details of the Union Pacific's earlier production units as well as Susquehanna's slightly smaller fleet, but we've designed the tooling with more variations in mind for the future.
The models feature the power, smoke, sound and lighting features you've come to expect from your LEGACY models. Operating ditch lights and front/rear walkway lights are included. Like the prototype, lighted number boards appear in the front only.
There are a few standouts among the UP fleet, and we've included four of them here:
- 1616 salutes Abraham Lincoln and accompanied the 4014 on its coast-to-coast tour
- 1776 carries the America 250 emblem and toured the nation in 2026
- 1979 wears a bold color scheme in honor of the UP's many employee programs
- 4015 has been adopted by the steam program to accompany 844 and 4014 when necessary
Each of these special locomotives is available both powered and non-powered - perfect for tucking in behind steam. Powered LEGACY models are also available in two numbers in the Union Pacific's standard as-delivered paint scheme as well as for the New York Susquehanna and Western.
