Old Number 233D5344
Locomotive #5344 was the first steam engine in the US to be streamlined twice. It was first streamlined in 1934 as the “Commodore Vanderbilt” with Scullin disc drivers added in 1935. #5344 was later streamlined to match the ten Hudson (5445-5454) as a Dreyfuss Hudson. Here is where it was assigned to the Mercury route using a Mercury paint scheme tender. This model recreates the #5344 Dreyfuss Hudson for Mercury train service. This engine pulled the James Whitcomb Riley from Cincinnati to Chicago through Indianapolis during its career. Complete your collection of 5344 in her various forms, as-built 700e, Commodore Vanderbilt, and now the Dreyfuss Hudson 5344. Complete with full streamlining, polished rods and Mercury painted tender with New York Central lettering.
Easily one of the most iconic steam locomotives of all time, Henry Dreyfuss' styling for the 1938 20th Century Limited has endured for nearly a century as a pinnacle of industrial design. Only ten J3 Hudsons received this treatment and the shrouds lasted barely a decade, but their impact on popular culture remains. The Hudson is finally back in the Lionel catalog, with all new tooling which allows accurate looks for both asdesigned and modified versions. 5449 and 5452 will feature the full streamlining, with either Boxpok or Scullin disk drive wheels as appropriate. It didn't take long for some of the streamlining to be cut back, however. 5445 shows a little trimming in its 1939 "Mercury" dress. We're offering 5445 again and 5447 with the impressive PT tenders as well. The enormous tanks and further reduction of the cowling did more for operations than appearance, but they are still impressive machines. Last but not least, we have one "fantasy" scheme which reverses the colors to better match the later look of the NYC's fleet. If only the prototypes had kept their styling long enough for the NYC to have tried the same! These locomotives feature full Legacy and Bluetooth control as well as whistle steam for the first time. All three version that include the PT tender will also have our water scoop effect in the tender to simulate the operation through track pans at high speed. Fans have been requesting a return of these beauties for many years, so don't miss the chance to add "the locomotive of the Century" to your roster!
