Overview:
The American Orient Express brought a rebirth of truly elegant luxury to American rails in the 1990s and early 2000s. Beginning as a humble five-car "American European Express" in 1990, at its peak, the train included 22 cars! Sometimes operated as two "smaller" 11 car trains, the AOE offered luxury tours around the country aboard finely refurbished rail cars. Amtrak suppled the locomotives for the train. Gleaming blue, cream, and gold paint on the outside only hinted at the opulence within. The train included a variety of very deluxe sleeping accommodations, lounge and dining cars and dome seating. Excursions offered a cruise-like experience with sightseeing from the train and stops along the way. With routes all around the country, the beautiful train could show up almost anywhere. Maybe it's time to make a trip to your railroad?
