In 1966, Pullman Standard introduced an updated version of its’ successful 4,427 cubic foot center discharge covered hopper. This “high side” hopper design moved the bottom of the sides upward for better access to the hopper discharge area and sloped the hoppers more sharply to facilitate faster and more complete unloading of less dense materials such as grain or ash while also including the larger long trough hatches which were highly suited to loading these commodities. These changes also made the cars lighter than their predecessors, and they were less expensive to make, which was important for what was at the time a very specialized freight car. Over 12,000 of the “high side” design car were built between 1966 and 1971, being both purchased outright by the railroads and private owners, or supplied by Pullman Standard as lease cars primarily in the grain, malt and lighter bulk chemical industries.
